Welcome to Millinocket

Superintendent Ken SmithWe are pleased to welcome you to the Millinocket School Department. Our backdrop is Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest mountain and one of the most beautiful. We are a forward looking school system that prides itself in providing its students with a strong academic background and a well rounded education. Our secondary school, Stearns High School, is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Our graduates regularly attend colleges and universities throughout the United States. Our graduates have gone on to become very successful in a highly competitive business world with Stearns High School graduates holding important positions throughout the world. Our Science Department provides our students with the opportunity to perform cutting edge science experiments. Our Performing Arts program, consistently recognized for its excellence, provides our students with strong instrumental and vocal opportunities. We provide students with quality play productions in a fully instrumented auditorium with excellent sound and lighting controls. Our athletic programs are very competitive at all levels, giving our students the opportunity to keep active and strive to be the best they can be. Stearns has a long history of successful sports teams. We offer a protective and supportive school system with an emphasis on parent - teacher communications. Our facilities and grounds are extremely well Ariel view of the high school complexmaintained. Our community is very supportive of its education system.

Our emphasis is on academics begins at the elementary school level with over 80% of our students meeting or exceeding the standards set in literacy by the State of Maine. We place a heavy emphasis on teaching children how to read, write and do math.

Just down the road in East Millinocket, is the Katahdin Region Higher Education Center, an off-campus center of Eastern Maine Community College and the University of Maine system, offering courses for certificate, associate, bachelor, and master programs. For business and industry, they provide customized training, including Zenger-Miller and apprenticeship training information.

Millinocket has a very low crime rate with a fine Police Department. The Public Works Department keeps streets and sidewalks clear of snow so travel within Millinocket is safe. Travel to and from Millinocket is easy, as we are only fifteen minutes from Interstate 95 and then a hop, skip and jump to Bangor International Airport, only an hour away. Locally we have an airport with two runways.

Millinocket Regional Hospital provides our citizens and visitors with quality medical care. Their twenty-five bed facilities offers out-patient and in-patient services with state of the art diagnostic equipment.
